The Rusty Trowel (Saturday, April 7, 2012)

Coastside Lodge wishes to institute a short program to honor, refresh memories and welcome all Master Masons living in the Pacifica area to our Lodge.

We have a prepared program which will include a special pin, a packet of information which contains a petition and other current pamphlets.

The purpose of the evening is to reestablish the Brotherhood which brought you to Masonry and assist you in being current with local Masonic information. This review should enable you to reestablish a personal connection with Masonry.

There are thousands of sojourning Masons living in our jurisdiction who are not active in Masonry. Unknown hundreds belong to lodges in other districts and jurisdictions and an equal amount of California Masons who have been displaced for one reason or another. Its been said that there are at least as many unaffiliated Masons living in our area as there are members.

We believe by bringing these sojourn brothers back into Masonic communications is important to us all. We wish to offer you and your family with that which is missing. There is no substitute for the continuing activity, friendship and sharing.

Sweetheart Event (February 2012)

The Sweetheart Event is held in February each year to honor the wives and significant others of Coastside Masons.

The symbols shown to the left signify our desire to honor the widows and our oath to aid and assist them. The symbol is the broken column.

In addition the For-Get-Me-Not flower is being adopted as the constant reminder that our journey to gain more light is supported by our significant others. And if it was not for their emotional support our journey would be ineffective and non-important.

Our Masonic oath calls for us to aid and support orphans, widows and all women.

This year the planning committee will be hosting Coastside Lodges version of “High Tea”.

High Tea begins at 3PM.

Lodge Room Dedication: William I. Messer

Recently Coastside Lodge said goodbye for now to Brother William “Bill” Messer who passed on Nov. 22, 2011 at the age of 91.

Bill was a mainstay of Coastside Lodge for many years and was one of the main Brothers responsible for building the current Coastside Lodge facility.

As written in our Historical Legacy booklet. Brother Messer was at the helm of our temple board during the transition of our relocation from Sharon to Waterford.

For his exemplary efforts he was given the Hiram Award in 1981.

Brother Bill was raised at Coastside Lodge June 29, 1961.

Brother Messer was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War in which he served honorably. Bill lived in Pacifica for 59 years and owned Bill’s Welding Service. An outdoors and avid fisherman, he is remembered as a man whose good nature was only surpassed by is unfailing generosity.

Therefore we dedicate the Coastside Lodge Room to the memory of Brother William Isaac Messer. Coastside Lodge Room shall for ever more be known as the William I. Messer Lodge Room.

Coastside Lodge #762 Christmas Message

Coastside Masonic Lodge has been a member of the Pacifica Community since the 1950’s.

As with all Masonic Lodges Coastside has strived to instill the values of our fraternity in tour local community by our actions.

As Masons, we strive to alleviate suffering and offer goodness in the lives of others. The Masons of Coastside Lodge #762 have quietly supported charitable works for years.

Most notable, is that the Masonic philosophy of humility is accompanied by significant giving. In general we believe that kind acts take place and there is no beating of drums or blaring of trumpets. Just quiet kindness because it was needed or because it was the right thing to do…

Many people know that their father or grandfather was a Mason or Shriner, but they don’t know what “Masonry” is about.

Freemasonry is not a religion, but encourages its members to practice their own religion. Freemasonry is not political, but it encourages patriotism. Freemasonry is not a charity, but its members practice charity throughout the world everyday. Freemasonry teaches good men to become better through using allegory to impress Ideals.

Therefore the Holiday Season is perfect for Masons and creating the Spirit of Christmas throughout the year.

Enjoy the Holiday season seize the spirit of Christmas and hold it dear in your hearts year around.

Merry Christmas
Everyone from
Coastside Lodge

Grand Lodge Legacy

During the Gold Rush of 1849, thousands of settlers came to California in search of fortune. Those who were Masons brought their rich traditions with them, soon establishing some of California’s first Masonic lodges in the mining towns of the Gold Country. In 1850 — the same year that California became a state — the Grand Lodge of California was established in Sacramento.

Today, the Grand Lodge of California boasts more than 65,000 members and 340 lodges located throughout the state, making it one of the largest Grand Lodges in the world.

On The Level

Masonry in the 21st Century serves a different purpose than when it was first formed. Yet our mission and principles are still relevant today and will endure for centuries to come.

Masonry is the world’s first and largest fraternal organization with a history that spans almost 300 years.

In California we have more than 350 lodges and 70,000 brothers. Across the country there are 13,000 lodges and 2 million Masons plus the fraternity accounts 5 million brothers worldwide.

The fraternity is guided by enduring principles— Brotherly love, relief, and truth and its core values are:

  • Ethics through leading a life based on honor and integrity
  • Tolerance for religious, ethnic, cultural, social, and educational differences
  • Personal growth through continuous pursuit of knowledge,
  • Philanthropy through charitable giving and community service,
  • Family, and Individual Freedom.

We are often asked “What do Masons do?”

Charity is the heart of Masonic activities. We all strive to make a difference in our communities, country, and our world through philanthropy and community service. Each year, California Masons donate millions of dollars and thousands of hours to small and large philanthropic causes. Masonic charities receive no local, state, or federal funding and are supported entirely by member contributions.

In California there are several major statewide Masonic programs.

There is our Public Schools program where we offer a comprehensive workshop at no cost which helps identify at-risk students. More than 4,500 educators have attended our program which as resulted in helping over 40,000 students.

Our four year scholarships of $45,000 and $10,000 each have enables thousands of students pursue a college education.

Our Kids ID program has provided free fingerprinting and photo identification to more than 350,000 California children.

The Masons of California also operates at no cost a Children’s Home in Covina for abandoned, abused and neglected children.

There is more.. To be continued in next month’s September/October issue of the Trestleboard.
