From The East (January 2012)

Brothers,

Happy New Year! And with it a new sense of purpose.

I wish to thank each of the brethren for the vote of confidence in reelecting me as the Worshipful Master.

Also I would like ask each of you to congratulate my appointment to the line of officers, Michael Perry and Allan Young. As I mentioned to the both of them, I am not appointing Sentinel; I am looking for a future Worshipful Master of our Lodge.

Next, I want each member to help me in continuing to grow our Lodge both in bringing in new members and increase attendance at our stated meetings.

With this in mind we will establish a “Rusty Trowel” event in April. We need to get as many of our legacy Master masons attend this special social event. Look for more details.

From The South (January 2012)

Brothers,

I hope everyone had a great holiday season. But now it’s time to go to work.

We have a very busy January and February schedule.

Therefore our degree team will need to be prepared to handle the work. Last year we did a very fine job in raising several brothers to the sublime degree of Master Mason. And now we are planning to do the same or more in the coming new year.

As the purveyor of refreshments when we meet, I just want to re-publish my refreshment plan for any degree work.

When we have practices there will be a light snack, at all degrees there will be a dinner at 6 PM and then dessert after the degree to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company.

I am open to meal suggestions. Hopefully we will have a good meal and more brethren attending the degrees.

Noah Lundling

From The West (January 2012)

Brethren of Coastside Lodge,

The new year brings optimism and new ideas rushing to form what will be a fun and entertaining year. We’re going to experiment a little, but by no means will we forget our traditions and rituals. We’re going to ask questions, too, like “ What does it mean to make good men better?” More importantly, though, we are going to be Brothers and journey together to find the light.

Also, this year we will be putting an emphasis on bringing our legacy Master Masons back to our lodge for a few meetings. One of our thoughts is to showcase our lodge history at these events.

So come on by for a spell and regale us with the story of your journey. The Great Light will be waiting, as will the warmth of our friendship. Of course, nothing warms the soul quite like a full belly, so there will be food from time to time, enough to drive the chill from our bones this cold , cold winter.

I look forward to catching up on old times and making new memories, too. Join us this year, especially at the “Rusty Trowel” event in April. Your attendance will make it a very special event for it is you all who mean so much to our lodge legacy.

Fraternally
David Bobrick

Secretary’s Message (January 2012)

Greetings my Brother!

The 2012 Dues are now due. Thank you to those of you who have already sent your dues. If you have not please do so by February 1 to assure your place in the Lodge.

If you have any special situation, please give me a call.

Recently several Brothers have asked about making donations either to the Lodge or the Masonic Homes. If you plan to make a donation make sure you indicate on your dues envelope were you would like your donation to be set aside for by the Lodge.

Be sure to check the upcoming events calendar on the front of the Trestleboard; there are a number of special events coming up this month, and we’d love to see you at Lodge.

Brethren, the 2012 Lodge Roster will be available February 1, 2012. If you have any corrections or additions you feel we need to made please send them to me at your earliest opportunity.

Our current Roster is missing some pertinent information from iMember account (members database). We are missing phone numbers, names of significant others, birthdates, etc. Please send me your corrections and information.

If you would like to have a copy of the Lodge Roster sent to you, please send a check for $2.00 and one will be mailed to you. Copies will be available at the Lodge for free.

Also if you know of any long time members who may have been suspended or forgotten in the Roster, please let me know. We can check and try to reinstate them if possible.

Remember that in addition to our website and Facebook pages, our monthly Trestleboard is also available via e-mail. If you would like to receive the Trestleboard electronically, please send me your e-mail address at: glopez@netwiz.net

I’ll be happy to add you to our growing cyberspace list. Getting the Trestleboard on-line will save the Lodge roughly $8 per year per member.

There will always be a few hard copies at the lodge for guest and reference. If you do not sign-up for the electronic version, it will still be mailed directly to you.

Brothers, your lodge needs all of you to come out and share your knowledge with us in order to make Coastside Lodge the best that it can be.

Fraternally yours,
Adolph Gus “Gomez” Lopez

Defining Literacy

Literacy is commonly defined as the ability to read and write. In order to effectively participate in society it is essential that we be able to read and write.

The second sense of literacy is the state of being informed, well educated, and knowledgeable about the realms of history, philosophy, politics, literature, music art, theater, science and technology.

These conceptions of literacy emphasize individual achievements and incline us to overlook the social nature of literacy.

Literacy, like language, is a means by which members of a culture construct and share meanings and intentions.

Children acquire competencies by immersion and participation in the daily activities. When oral and written texts are involved, children also become literate as they learn to participate in the use of texts. Upon entering school, children are exposed to a new set of social practices, a new culture having its own rules concerning the use of language and literacy.

Then what we mean by literacy is based upon the nature of learning. Therefore participation in social practices is extremely important, and our teaching practices must be focused upon creating conditions that invite learners to become involved in literate social practices that have genuine meaning to them and their future.

So no more texting at the Dinner table!
