From The East (December 2011)

Brothers,

My first year as Master of the Lodge now comes to close. I wish to thank all the Brothers of Coastside Lodge for the help and support.

One of my joys for this year has been our continued growth as a Lodge.

With a few new members and raised Masons we will continue to see our part of the continued legacy of Free and Accepted Masons continue to thrive.

Once again the new year brings new hope and challenges. I look forward to 2012 as another year of hope and growth for our Coastside Lodge.

Coastside has a number of members who were raised here and have moved out of the area. Some as far as the East Coast. Yet it’s my hope that the Brothers who have been away for a while will find an opportunity to visit us soon or at the very least write us a letter letting us know you’re doing well. Please let us know.

On The Level (December 2011)

Last month we finished the segment with a brief discussion of: “Is Masonry a Secret Organization?”

No, it is not, but like all fraternities and sororities, there are meetings and discussions that are for members only such as signs, grips and ceremonies which are not openly shared.

As Brother Benjamin Franklin reportedly said, “The greatest secret of Freemasons is that they have no secrets at all.”

Each member finds that there are several rewards in being a Mason. Most members say that the following are the most benefit to them:

  • Personal growth
  • Friendships & Brotherly Love
  • Community Service
  • Philanthropic Programs
  • Belong to a Group making a difference

One of the major traditions of Masonry is that we do not openly solicit members. Men must ask for an application on their own initiative.

Membership is open to men age 18 or older who believe in a Supreme Being. We welcome men of all ethnic and religious backgrounds who meet the qualifications and standards.

Here is how the process is designed to work.

First a member of a Lodge is asked for an application. Today there are many men who contact Masonry via our Grand Lodge and local Lodges websites and Facebook pages.

This typically followed by a visit to the Lodge to meet the members and they meet the potential candidate.

After these preliminary steps and application is filled out and submitted to the Lodge for consideration.

The application must have two Masons who recommend the potential new candidate.

The completed application is then submitted with the Fee (which is set by the Lodge). It is read in the Stated Lodge meeting and the brothers consider the application for degrees to be conferred.

If accepted then an investigation committee is appointed by the Master of the Lodge. The committee then will schedule a visit with the potential candidate at their home to discuss the application and to answer any questions.

Then passed upon the committee’s report to the Master the application will be read again and voted on at the next Lodge meeting and then result of the vote are recorded in the Lodge minutes. The candidate is immediately notified of acceptance. The process typically takes six to eight weeks.

This ends “On the Level”.

From The South (December 2011)

Brothers,

Where has the year gone? It seems just like yesterday I was just settling in as the Junior Warden, now all of a sudden I’ll be the Senior Warden for 2012.

As for being the Newly elected Senior Warden, I am looking forward to the challenges and role that I will play in assuring the traditions of Freemasonry continue.

I see great promise with the new members that we have coming into the Lodge. With their hard work in learning their parts we will continue to see the growth and continuation of Coastside Lodge #762 for the foreseeable future.

As my other Brothers have expressed, I too would love to see more of our older brothers attend our lodge meetings and events. If a ride or any other assistance
Is needed please let us know.

We want all brothers to attend but especially those who represent the legacy of Coastside Lodge.

By the Plumb,
David Bobrick

From The West (December 2011)

Brethren of Coastside Lodge,

Now our Lodge elections are completed and there is a new slate of officers for 2012. (See Page 4)

The New Year brings great promise and a renewed excitement about the positive growth of Coastside Lodge.
In looking back upon the past year there are a number of positive changes. For example we raised three new brothers to the sublime degree of Master Mason and initiated
Several new brothers this year.

We also lost a few brothers who have gone on to the place where no one as returned. Plus a couple of brothers who have moved away . We will miss them all.

On a personal note, now that I am moving on to be the Officers Coach, I hope that our new slate of officers will continue to see the Lodge prosper by bringing in new brothers and raising new Master Masons.
We now need to form our 2012 Planning Team and create our 2012 Operating Budget and program’s for next year’s lodge activities.

This year we must make every effort to stay within our budget. This past year we had to make a few major necessary facilities expenditures. So now we need to let our accounts grow.

Secretary’s Message (December 2011)

Greetings my Brother!

The 2012 Dues Notices have been sent out. Please send your dues in by January 1, 2012.

If you have any special situation, please give me a call.

Recently several Brothers have asked about making donations either to the Lodge or the Masonic Homes. If you plan to make a donation make sure you indicate on your dues envelope were you would like your donation to be set aside for by the Lodge.

Be sure to check the upcoming events calendar on the front of the Trestleboard; there are a number of special events coming up this month, and we’d love to see you at Lodge.

Brethren, we will be updating the Lodge Roster next month. If you have any corrections or additions you feel we need to make please send them to me at your earliest opportunity.

Our current Roster is missing some pertinent information from iMember account (members database). We are missing phone numbers, names of significant others, birthdates, etc. Please send me your corrections and information.

Also if you know of any long time members who may have been suspended or forgotten in the Roster, please let me know. We can check and try to reinstate them if possible.

Remember that in addition to our website and Facebook pages, our monthly Trestleboard is also available via e-mail. If you would like to receive the Trestleboard electronically, please send me your e-mail address at: glopez@netwiz.net

I’ll be happy to add you to our growing cyberspace list. Getting the Trestleboard on-line will save the Lodge roughly $8 per year per member.

There will always be a few hard copies at the lodge for guest and reference. If you do not sign-up for the electronic version, it will still be mailed directly to you.

Brothers, your lodge needs all of you to come out and share your knowledge with us in order to make Coastside Lodge the best that it can be.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Fraternally yours,
Adolph Gus “Gomez” Lopez

Coastside Lodge #762 Christmas Message

Coastside Masonic Lodge has been a member of the Pacifica Community since the 1950’s.

As with all Masonic Lodges Coastside has strived to instill the values of our fraternity in tour local community by our actions.

As Masons, we strive to alleviate suffering and offer goodness in the lives of others. The Masons of Coastside Lodge #762 have quietly supported charitable works for years.

Most notable, is that the Masonic philosophy of humility is accompanied by significant giving. In general we believe that kind acts take place and there is no beating of drums or blaring of trumpets. Just quiet kindness because it was needed or because it was the right thing to do…

Many people know that their father or grandfather was a Mason or Shriner, but they don’t know what “Masonry” is about.

Freemasonry is not a religion, but encourages its members to practice their own religion. Freemasonry is not political, but it encourages patriotism. Freemasonry is not a charity, but its members practice charity throughout the world everyday. Freemasonry teaches good men to become better through using allegory to impress Ideals.

Therefore the Holiday Season is perfect for Masons and creating the Spirit of Christmas throughout the year.

Enjoy the Holiday season seize the spirit of Christmas and hold it dear in your hearts year around.

Merry Christmas
Everyone from
Coastside Lodge

Masonic Christmas Story

There it sat, wrapped in green paper with drawings of Candy Canes, surrounded by a carefully-tied broad red ribbon. The smell of the cookies inside the package lingered in the air. The Master’s wife had baked several dozen of the Christmas treats and put them into little parcels to be delivered to the widows of members of the Lodge. The Master had driven around to drop them off, along with a card and a holiday wish from their late husband’s brothers in Masonry. But one package remained on the dining room table.

“All of the guys jumped up and volunteered at the last stated meeting to take these little packages to the widows, but I’m the only one who’s been doing it”, thought the Master to himself. “I know! I’ll call around and see who can deliver this last one.”

He speed dialed his Senior Warden. The Warden answered.

“Bob, it’s Rick,” said the Master cheerfully. “Mrs. Brown’s cookies are over here and I was wondering if you could drop them off?

“We talked to her a few days ago and told her we’d do it tonight, and…”

“Wow, I’d like to,” “but tonight’s really a bad night. It’s my War craft night and I’m kicking Ass.”

“Can’t you play some other night?”

“Not now. I’m in the middle of this. Maybe tomorrow, if I’m not at a new level in a few hours.”

The Master thanked him and put a call in to the Junior Deacon.

“Steve, remember you said you could help deliver the widow’s Christmas presents? Well, Mrs. Brown is sitting at…”

“I am sorry,” said the Junior Deacon. “I know I said that, but my office Christmas party is tonight and I have to go to that. The boss kind of expects it.”

“Can’t you say no or get there a little late?”

“Well you know he doesn’t have a very good opinion of us because when he wants me to work late and I can’t cause we’re doing something at the lodge. Besides the drinks are free. Talk to you next meeting.”
The Junior Deacon hung up. Somewhat discouraged, the Master tried a few other members, but all were busy with parties or just too tired after work. Finally, the Master tried the last person on his list, a Past Master of the Lodge.

“Joe, I need your help. Last meeting you said you’d help deliver the widow’s gifts. Mrs. Brown is sitting at home waiting and…”

“Brown/!” he interrupted. “Did you know he dumped on me the whole year I was in the chair. He kept giving me hell for every little thing.”

“But Joe that doesn’t have anything to do with this widow, its lodge tradition we go out and deliver..”

“And another thing,” butted in the Past Master. “ Last meeting you came down to the Alter at the wrong time. And you didn’t knock correctly to close the Lodge. Can’t you follow traditions?”

“We were talking about Mrs. Brown…”

“Brown. The hell with him.” and the phone went dead.

The Master prepared to deliver the lonely package, when the phone rang. He picked up the receiver.

“Hello my name is Mrs. Lane,” the feeble old voice said, “I live next door to Gladys Brown. I though I should call you. She has been taken to the Hospital.”

“What!?” answered the stunned Master.

“ I invited her to dinner this evening, but she couldn’t come because she was expecting the Masons gift. She got a little tried waiting so was attempting to call you Masons to see if there was a problem, but she tripped on the carpet and fell. I think she was on the floor for awhile. It looks serious. Thought I should call you.”

“My father was a Mason a long time ago,” Mrs. Lane said. “He didn’t talk about it much, but I remember one year during the depression, the Masons helped us. One Christmas we had nothing, but a bunch of Masons came to the house with a lovely tree, presents and a turkey. The put the tree up and we all sang Christmas songs. Oh it was lovely. I learned then that when things are tough you can depend on Masons.”

Thank you for calling me Mrs. Lane,” said the Master.

“To bad someone didn’t get here a little earlier because this probably wouldn’t have happened,” added the old women. “ But God Bless you Masons.”

“Yes, thanks again,” replied the Master and gently hung up the phone.

As the Master put on his jacket, and picked up the little wrapped parcel, and walked out into the moon -it evening, he wondered if the Masons today really were like their forefathers.
